The Somaliland Ministry of Livestock Development and Rural Development has launched the renovation and modernisation of the livestock slaughterhouse in Borama, the capital of Awdal Region, in a move aimed at improving livestock health standards and protecting public health.
The foundation stone for the project was laid yesterday in Borama, marking the beginning of efforts to upgrade the facility and provide residents with a safer and more regulated environment for slaughtering livestock.
Minister of Livestock Development and Rural Development Hon. Omar Shu’aib Mohamed urged residents of Borama and the wider Awdal Region to use the designated slaughterhouse for slaughtering their animals.
The Minister highlighted the presence of veterinary doctors at the facility, who inspect animals before slaughter to determine their health and ensure they are safe for human consumption.
“The people living in the city and the region should slaughter their livestock here. Veterinary doctors are present, the safety of the animals is being safeguarded, and their health is being examined,” Minister Omar Shu’aib said.
He further called on the public to comply with the Ministry’s livestock health guidelines, stressing that proper veterinary inspection is essential for safeguarding both livestock and consumers.
The modernisation of the Borama slaughterhouse is expected to strengthen hygiene and veterinary controls while promoting safer livestock slaughtering practices in the Awdal region.
The Minister emphasised that protecting the health and safety of both people and livestock remains a key responsibility of the Ministry.
