Republic of Somaliland’s diplomatic engagement with Kenya has gained renewed momentum following President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro’s recent visit to Nairobi, where he held high-level meetings with Kenya’s political leadership and members of the diplomatic and development community.

Dr. Mohamed Abdilahi Omar, Somaliland’s Ambassador to Kenya and former Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, said the President’s visit created an important opportunity to strengthen relations between Somaliland and Kenya and expand cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

During the visit, President Irro met with Kenyan President William Ruto at State House, as well as Rt. Hon. Moses Wetang’ula, Speaker of Kenya’s National Assembly, and other senior Kenyan officials.

According to Ambassador Omar, the discussions focused on areas with significant potential for expanded cooperation, including trade and investment, economic cooperation, infrastructure, energy, healthcare and shared regional interests.

The President also met with approximately 20 representatives from the diplomatic and development community in Nairobi. Ambassador Omar described the engagement as particularly significant, saying it allowed President Irro to directly present his administration’s priorities, Somaliland’s progress and opportunities for international partnership.

The meeting also provided development and diplomatic partners with an opportunity to raise questions, exchange views and discuss areas where their interests could align with Somaliland’s development priorities.

Ambassador Omar said he was encouraged by the genuine interest expressed by the participants and their willingness to engage in substantive discussions about potential cooperation.

He further noted that the visit built on relationships and diplomatic conversations that the Somaliland Mission in Kenya has been developing throughout the year.

Expressing appreciation to Kenya’s government and the diplomatic and development community, Ambassador Omar welcomed the warm reception given to President Irro and the openness demonstrated during the engagements.

“There is considerable goodwill towards Somaliland in Kenya,” Ambassador Omar stated, emphasizing that the Somaliland Mission is encouraged by the growing level of engagement.

He said the priority now is to translate the goodwill generated through diplomacy into practical cooperation, meaningful partnerships and tangible development results for Somaliland.

President Irro’s Nairobi engagements therefore mark another significant step in Somaliland’s efforts to deepen regional partnerships and broaden economic and diplomatic cooperation, with Kenya emerging as an important platform for advancing shared interests in the Horn of Africa.
