Republic of Somaliland’s Ministry of Information, Culture and National Guidance is advancing plans to revive the country’s National Theatre, in a move aimed at strengthening the preservation and promotion of the Somali language, culture and literary heritage.
Minister of Information, Culture and National Guidance Hon. Barkhad Jama Batoon said the ministry is working to restore the National Theatre to active service, describing it as an important platform for safeguarding Somaliland’s cultural identity and mother tongue.
“We are working to revive the National Theatre, and it will become part of our efforts to preserve our culture and protect our mother tongue,” Batoon said.
The minister also announced the establishment of a large public forum designed to host evening programs, cultural activities and discussions focusing on issues related to language, culture and literature.
“We are establishing a large public forum here, and at night it will serve as a place where different topics will be discussed,” he said.
The initiative is expected to provide a dedicated space for artists, writers, intellectuals and members of the public to engage in discussions and cultural activities, while helping promote Somaliland’s linguistic and literary heritage.
The planned revival of the National Theatre marks an effort to restore a historic cultural institution and create a platform where Somaliland’s language, traditions, arts and literary voices can once again take centre stage.
