Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced today that Israel has formally recognized the Republic of Somaliland as an independent and sovereign state, marking a major diplomatic milestone for the self-declared republic in the Horn of Africa.

In a statement from his office, Netanyahu confirmed that he, alongside Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar and Somaliland President Dr. Abdirahman Mohamed Abdallahi Irro, signed a joint mutual declaration of recognition during a teleconference.

Netanyahu described the agreement as being “in the spirit of the Abraham Accords,” the normalization deals initiated under former U.S. President Donald Trump that expanded Israel’s ties with several Arab countries. He congratulated President Abdallahi on his leadership and dedication to promoting stability and peace in the Horn of Africa region, and extended an official invitation for an state visit to Israel.

President Abdallahi expressed deep appreciation for the “historic declaration” and praised Netanyahu’s accomplishments in combating terrorism and fostering regional peace.

Netanyahu also extended thanks to Foreign Minister Sa’ar, Mossad Director David Barnea, and the Mossad for their role in facilitating the breakthrough. He wished the people of Somaliland “success, prosperity, and freedom.

“Israel intends to rapidly deepen relations with Somaliland through collaboration in agriculture, health, technology, and economic development. The agreement paves the way for full diplomatic ties, including the exchange of ambassadors and establishment of embassies.

The recognition occurs amid heightened strategic interest in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden due to ongoing security challenges, including Houthi threats in Yemen.

Analysts view it as a step toward enhanced cooperation in counterterrorism, maritime security, and economic development.
