Somaliland Launches Ambitious 2026–2030 Climate Strategy to Combat Drought and Environmental Degradation

The Minister of Environment and Climate Change of the Republic of Somaliland, Abdilaahi Jama Osman (Geeljire), alongside Deputy Minister Samsam Mohamed Salah, has officially unveiled Somaliland’s five-year Environment and Climate Change Strategy for 2026–2030.

The launch marks a significant step toward strengthening environmental protection, restoration, and sustainable management across the country. The new strategy outlines a comprehensive roadmap to guide national efforts in addressing the growing impacts of climate change.

Government leaders emphasized their commitment to tackling key environmental challenges, including recurring droughts, deforestation, land degradation, and the depletion of natural resources. The plan also prioritizes afforestation, water management, public awareness, and enhanced collaboration among government institutions, civil society, and international partners.

The event drew senior government officials, representatives of international organizations, civil society groups, and environmental experts, all of whom stressed the urgent need for a unified and effective national approach to safeguard Somaliland’s environment and build resilience against climate change.
