President Abdirahman Irro Launches First Ever Somaliland Trade and Livestock Production Expo

The President of the Republic of Somaliland, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi Irro has underpinned the fact that since livestock production is the key backbone of the country’s economy hence is likewise deep rooted in the nation’s culture; the government would always do its best to bolster the sector and make it fledge.

He particularly urged for the urgent need to modernize traditional livestock-rearing practices for boosting maximum production.

The Head of State made the statement as he officially launched on Monday the maiden two-day Somaliland Trade and Livestock Production Expo, held at the Grand Haadi Hotel in Hargeisa.

The expo, the first of its kind in Somaliland, was organized at a high professional level by the Ministry of Livestock and Rural Development, in collaboration with partner institutions and organizations.

While addressing the ceremony, President Abdirahman Irro expressed his gratitude and appreciation to senior officials and staff of the Ministry of Livestock, partner institutions, and individuals who made the event possible.

The President stressed that livestock are the backbone of Somaliland’s economy, a symbol of national heritage and culture, the foundation of livelihoods, and a defining identity of the Somaliland people.

He underlined that livestock form the core of national production (GDP) and are the primary source of foreign currency earnings through exports.

The President noted that every Somaliland citizen experiences firsthand the central role livestock play in daily life.

He further emphasized the urgent need to modernize traditional livestock-rearing practices, which can no longer cope with current challenges such as environmental degradation, recurrent droughts, and global climate change. He stated that the government has already initiated several measures to address the challenges facing livestock trade and production.

The President outlined key government commitments, including:

1. Improving livestock husbandry system

2. Establishing new grazing reserves across all regions

3. Protecting and rehabilitating rangelands

4. Environmental conservation

5. Climate change resilience

6. Controlling livestock diseases

In conclusion, President Cirro welcomed the expertise and advice of both local and international investors and specialists attending the expo, affirming that investment, trade, and livestock production in Somaliland remain open to all partners committed to fair and mutually beneficial cooperation.

The event served as a national platform bringing together all key stakeholders involved in livestock trade and development. Minister of Livestock and Rural Development, Hon. Dr. Omar Shu’ayb Mohamed, and the Director General of the Ministry, Ahmed Osman Jama (Talosame) delivered expert presentations outlining the objectives of the expo.

They explained that the exhibition aims to demonstrate the true potential of Somaliland’s livestock sector, while strengthening the value chain of animal care, production, trade, and marketing of live animals.

Both officials emphasized that the expo strongly promotes innovation, improved livestock productivity, and the creation of new business opportunities, contributing to increased income generation, job creation, and national economic growth.
