In a landmark move to ensure uninterrupted education during crises, the Republic of Somaliland’s Ministry of Education and Science has officially approved a comprehensive Emergency Education Plan. The announcement was made during a pivotal one-day meeting chaired by State Minister Mohamed Yusuf Ibrahim and Director General Abdirahman Hussein Hirsi.

The meeting, held at the Ministry’s headquarters in Hargeisa, brought together key stakeholders, including Minister Prof. Ismail Duale Yusuf, regional education chairpersons, department directors, and senior advisors. The group reviewed extensive data highlighting the challenges posed by natural disasters, conflicts, and droughts, which frequently disrupt the education system and affect students across Somaliland.

The newly endorsed plan outlines strategic measures to maintain educational continuity in times of crisis, ensuring that children and youth can continue learning despite adverse conditions. Discussions focused on unifying rapid-response strategies to address emergencies effectively, with an emphasis on resilience and adaptability.

In his closing remarks, Minister Prof. Ismail Duale Yusuf described the plan as a “milestone in safeguarding the right to education.” He reaffirmed the Ministry’s unwavering commitment to protecting the educational rights of Somaliland’s youth, stating, “No child should be denied learning, no matter the circumstances. This plan is our promise to deliver education against all odds.”

The Emergency Education Plan is expected to strengthen Somaliland’s education system, providing a robust framework to navigate future challenges and ensure that students across the country have access to consistent, quality education.
