In a significant step toward strengthening environmental conservation, the Minister of Environment, Hon. Abdilahi Jama Osman (Geeljire), and the Director General of the Ministry of Environment, Mr. Abdi Ali Mahdi, convened a pivotal meeting today at the ministry’s headquarters. The gathering brought together representatives from the Wildlife, Pasture, and Plant Protection Unit of Somaliland, alongside officials from various government branches and security forces.
The meeting focused on fostering collaboration and sharing insights to enhance the protection of Somaliland’s natural resources. Discussions centered on strategies to safeguard biodiversity, combat deforestation, and promote sustainable land use, aligning with the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change’s mission to ensure a resilient and sustainable environment for future generations.
Minister Geeljire emphasized the importance of unified efforts in addressing environmental challenges, stating, “Protecting our wildlife, pastures, and plants is critical to sustaining Somaliland’s ecosystems and livelihoods. Today’s meeting marks a commitment to stronger coordination across government sectors.”
The Wildlife, Pasture, and Plant Protection Unit outlined plans to enhance monitoring and enforcement measures, ensuring the preservation of Somaliland’s unique flora and fauna. Representatives from the security forces also pledged support in combating illegal activities such as poaching and unauthorized land use.
This initiative comes as part of Somaliland’s broader efforts to address climate change and environmental degradation, building on the Ministry’s vision to promote sustainable development and improve living standards through responsible stewardship of natural resources.
The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change plans to follow up with additional workshops and community engagement programs to further these conservation goals.
