The Hargeisa Water Agency has announced the implementation of a presidential directive aimed at easing the burden on low-income residents by reducing the cost of water sold at public water distribution points across the city.
Speaking on the matter, the Agency’s Manager, Abdilahi Bershia, confirmed that the new pricing policy will officially take effect on 1 July 2026, in line with a decree issued by the President of the Republic of Somaliland.
According to Beershiya, the decision is expected to provide significant relief to thousands of vulnerable families who rely on water supplied through the agency’s public water points.
“The presidential directive concerning the reduction of water prices for low-income residents who obtain water from public distribution points will be implemented by the Hargeisa Water Agency starting from 1 July 2026,” said Bershiya. “Under the new arrangement, beneficiaries will be able to purchase water for 8,500 Somaliland Shillings (SLSH).”
The move forms part of broader efforts by the Somaliland government to improve access to essential services and support households facing economic challenges. Residents and community leaders have welcomed the announcement, describing it as a timely intervention that will help many families cope with the rising cost of living.
The Hargeisa Water Agency has urged the public to take note of the new pricing structure, which will be enforced at all agency-managed water distribution points beginning next month.
