In a landmark evening at the heart of British democracy, the Republic of Somaliland celebrated its 35th anniversary of restored sovereignty with a vibrant reception in the House of Commons, drawing diplomats, MPs, investors, and a proud diaspora community. The event not only highlighted Somaliland’s remarkable journey as a beacon of stability and democracy in the Horn of Africa but also marked a historic milestone in its emerging global partnerships.

Hon. Said Hassan Bihi, Somaliland’s Ambassador to the UK, delivered heartfelt thanks in a message that captured the spirit of the night. “Dear Rt Hon MPs, Diplomats, investors and Somaliland Diaspora in the United Kingdom,” he wrote on behalf of the Somaliland UK Mission. “Your participation demonstrates the strength, commitment, determination, and the democratic values that Somaliland has proudly upheld over the last three and a half decades.”

The ambassador praised attendees for elevating Somaliland’s cause onto the global stage, calling their presence a powerful affirmation of shared values and future-oriented friendship. “Your individual contribution made the event a great success,” he added, expressing deep gratitude for the collective voice that continues to champion Somaliland’s quest for wider international recognition.

The celebration carried special significance with the attendance of Daniele Grudsky, Chargé d’Affaires at the Israeli Embassy in London. In a warmly received social media post, Grudsky shared: “Last night I had the pleasure of attending Somaliland’s 35th anniversary reception, marking their restoration of sovereignty in 1991. It was a wonderful celebration of Somaliland culture and heritage.”

She went further, revealing a groundbreaking development: Israel had just received Somaliland’s first-ever Ambassador to the country. “We look forward to strengthening our ties both here in the UK and in Israel,” Grudsky stated, signaling a promising new chapter of bilateral cooperation.

The convergence of these voices at the House of Commons underscores Somaliland’s growing diplomatic momentum. Long praised for its peaceful self-governance, multi-party democracy, and strategic location, Somaliland is steadily building bridges with forward-looking partners. The presence of Israeli diplomacy alongside British parliamentarians and the Somaliland diaspora and Somaliland parliamentary paints a picture of a nation confidently stepping onto the world stage—35 years after reclaiming its independence.

As cultural performances and warm conversations filled the historic halls, one message rang clear: Somaliland is not waiting for permission to thrive. With friends in high places and a track record of resilience, its story of quiet determination is now echoing louder than ever in global capitals. The 18th of May reception wasn’t just a birthday party—it was a declaration of enduring partnerships and unstoppable progress.
