Republic of Somaliland’s Foreign Minister Hon. Abdirahman Dahir Adan has highlighted major infrastructure challenges facing the country, particularly in road networks and the lack of connectivity between fertile and productive regions.

Speaking at a ceremony marking the signing of the first phase of the Lowyo-Addo–Borama road construction project, the minister said Somaliland is rich in agricultural potential but continues to struggle with poor access routes that prevent goods from reaching markets efficiently.

He pointed out that several productive rural areas remain isolated due to impassable or non-existent roads, forcing reliance on imports despite strong local production.

“Our country suffers from a lack of infrastructure. There are many fertile areas with abundant crops that are difficult to reach, even within days of travel,” he said. “I have seen places where mangoes and papayas are so plentiful that children use them as footballs, yet we still import similar products from Ethiopia because transportation is impossible.”

The minister stressed that improving road infrastructure is essential for unlocking economic growth and strengthening domestic trade.

He further expressed optimism about the future, calling for the development of railway networks that could connect Somaliland with neighboring countries. According to him, such regional transport systems would enhance trade, mobility, and development across the Horn of Africa.

“Railway lines connecting countries are part of progress and international recognition we seek. I hope we will soon have railways linking the Horn of Africa region,” he added.
