In a remarkable story of determination, community service, and local engagement, Rhoda Ibrahim (also known as RoodaKaraani) has achieved a historic win in the Brent Borough Council election. She secured the seat with the highest number of votes, marking a proud milestone for herself and the vibrant Somali diaspora in London.

A Journey Rooted in Service
Born in the bustling city of Burao, the capital of Togdheer Region in Somaliland, Rhoda has long been a dedicated community leader in the UK. She founded and runs SAAFI (Somali Advice and Forum of Information), an organisation that supports the Somali community with integration, health, education, and wider social issues. Through years of hands-on work, she has become a trusted voice and advocate for Somali women and families in Brent and beyond.
Her contributions have earned widespread recognition.

In 2019, Queen Elizabeth II personally invited her — as one of 160 outstanding community leaders from religious and voluntary organisations across the UK — to Buckingham Palace. There, Rhoda was awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) for her services to the African and Somali communities. She and SAAFI have also received multiple local and national honours for their vital support during the COVID-19 pandemic.
From Community Advocate to Councillor
Rhoda’s transition from grassroots work to elected office reflects the power of consistent local engagement and resilience. Residents of Brent have rewarded her long-standing dedication with strong support at the ballot box.
Congratulations to Councillor Rhoda Ibrahim on this impressive and well-deserved victory! Her journey from Burao to the Brent Council chamber stands as an inspiring example of what hard work, community focus, and determination can achieve.
