The Minister of Justice of the Republic of Somaliland, Mr. Yonis Ahmed Yonis, has officially announced the formation of a new Lawyers’ Licensing and Disciplinary Committee, marking a significant step toward strengthening the country’s legal system.
The committee was established through a ministerial decree in line with amendments to the Lawyers’ Law (Law No. 30/2004). It is mandated to oversee the regulation, development, and professional standards of the legal profession in Somaliland.
According to the decree, the committee will be responsible for issuing licenses to practicing lawyers, monitoring professional conduct, and ensuring that legal services are delivered in accordance with national laws and established procedures.
Speaking on the importance of the initiative, the Minister emphasized that the new body will play a vital role in improving the quality of legal services and safeguarding public confidence in the legal profession. He also called on government institutions and relevant stakeholders to work closely with the committee to achieve its objectives.
The newly appointed committee members are:
- Ahmed Mohamed Iidan – Director of the Legal Professionals Department, Ministry of Justice
- Ibrahim Khadar Said – Director of Legal Affairs
- Ahmed Muse Jama – Member of Parliament
- Ali Said Ali Nuuh – Member of Parliament
- Yahya Ali Idris – Lawyer
- Abdirahman Ali Mohamed – Lawyer
- Sawda Mohamed Hirsi – Lawyer
The establishment of this committee is seen as a key reform aimed at enhancing accountability, professionalism, and trust within Somaliland’s legal sector.
