The Minister of Livestock, Omar Shu’ayb—responsible for pastoralists and animal welfare—together with the Minister of Resettlement, Suleiman Duale, and the Minister of Religious Affairs, Sheikh Abdilahi, has visited communities of drought-displaced pastoralists who recently arrived in the Sahil region.
The ministers toured Qadhiidha Mountain, Mandera District, where families and their livestock have migrated after being forced out of eastern regions by worsening drought conditions. The visit coincided with the distribution of food aid and essential supplies to affected households.
Speaking at the event, Minister Shu’ayb said the government responded swiftly after receiving reports of the migration. Veterinary teams were deployed in advance to assess livestock health, examining each animal as it was unloaded to ensure their condition was stable.
Addressing residents of Sahil, the minister urged solidarity and compassion. He emphasized that those arriving had fled severe drought in their home areas and should be welcomed and supported by host communities.
He also commended the people of Sahil for their unity, noting that communities across Somaliland share common values and responsibilities, especially during times of hardship.
Despite the difficult conditions facing the country, the minister reassured displaced families that assistance would continue and that no effort would be spared in delivering available support.
Minister Shu’ayb further expressed appreciation to the NEDFOR organization for its role in providing food aid distributed to the pastoralist families, highlighting the importance of coordinated humanitarian efforts.
