Information Minister Pushes for Modern Theater and Digital Revival of Historic Archives in High-Level Talks with Swiss and DT Global Partners

Republic of Somaliland’s Minister of Information, Culture, and Awareness and also the Government Spokesperson, Hon. Barkhad Jama Batuun, hosted a high-level delegation from DT Global and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) at his office on Tuesday.

The meeting centered on deepening partnership between the ministry and the two international organizations, with particular focus on advancing cultural development and safeguarding Somaliland’s rich societal heritage.

Discussions highlighted the urgent need to modernize and digitize the country’s valuable historical archives, including old tapes from Radio Hargeisa, footage from the National Television, and historical records preserved at Dawan Newspaper.

Minister Barkhad Jama emphasized that developing culture and literature remains a top national priority. He stressed the importance of constructing a large modern theater that would serve as a vibrant hub for entertainment while nurturing and promoting the Somali language and literature.

Following the productive talks, the minister, accompanied by Deputy Minister Muse Askar Guleid and senior directors from the ministry, led the delegation on a tour of the archives at Radio Hargeisa, National Television, and Dawan Newspaper to assess current conditions and explore opportunities for upgrading the facilities.

The DT Global team included Project Manager Mukhtar Yuusuf Osman and Project Lead Muna Ahmed Omar. The SDC delegation, based in Nairobi, was headed by Agency Chief Ms. Martina and Culture Section Head Bihawa.

Both organizations reaffirmed their strong commitment to supporting Somaliland’s efforts in cultural preservation, heritage protection, and the modernization of national media archives.

The meeting concluded with a clear consensus to intensify cooperation and fast-track joint projects aimed at cultural advancement and the digital transformation of Somaliland’s historical treasures.
