The Government of the Republic of Somaliland has strongly condemned an incident targeting foreign nationals residing in Borama, describing it as an organized goonish attempt to undermine the country’s stability and international reputation.
Minister of Information, Culture and National Guidance, whose office also carries the official government spokesmanship portfolio, Hon. Barkhad Jama Batuun made the remarks during a press conference at his office on Saturday, warning that anyone found responsible for the misdemeanors would face legal consequences.
The minister stressed that the authority to regulate the entry, residency and departure of foreign nationals rests exclusively with the government, hence emphasized that no individual or group of individuals has the right to take the law into their own hands.
“As a government, we consider the act targeting foreign nationals to be an organized incident aimed at undermining the reputation and stability of the Republic of Somaliland,” Batuun said.
He further underpinned the fact that the government would launch an investigation to identify those involved and ensure that appropriate legal measures are taken against anyone found to have participated in the incident.
Hon. Batuun described the incident as an attempt to damage Somaliland’s national standing and reputation, reaffirming the government’s commitment to upholding the rule of law, protecting foreign nationals and maintaining public order and stability.
