Jubilant crowds filled the streets and stadiums across Somaliland today as citizens celebrated Israel’s formal recognition of the Republic of Somaliland as an independent and sovereign state. The landmark decision, announced on December 26, marks the first time any United Nations member state has officially recognized Somaliland’s sovereignty.

Thousands gathered at Hargeisa Stadium, waving Somaliland and Israeli flags, chanting “Thank you Israel—you are our ally; we will never forget.” The crowds highlighted the symbolic significance of the move, noting that Israel had previously recognized Somaliland’s brief independence in 1960 before its voluntary union with Somalia. Speakers and attendees described the recognition as a powerful symbol of enduring friendship, solidarity, and shared values, opening a new chapter of cooperation in security, development, and regional stability.
Similar scenes of celebration unfolded in cities and neighborhoods throughout Somaliland, with demonstrations of support for the historic breakthrough. Somaliland officials and residents emphasized that the recognition reflects the will of the people and reinforces the nation’s commitment to peace and self-determination after more than three decades of unrecognized statehood.

Beyond domestic festivities, Somaliland’s diaspora and pilgrims in Saudi Arabia joined in the joy. During the Hajj season, citizens performing Umrah at Mount Arafat raised the Somaliland flag and offered prayers of gratitude to God for this milestone achievement. These heartfelt supplications at the sacred site underscored the deep spiritual gratitude felt by many in the community, blending national pride with religious devotion.
The recognition has been welcomed by Somaliland’s leadership as a step toward greater international legitimacy and partnerships. Celebrations in Somaliland continue to reflect widespread public support and optimism for the future.
