In a significant development during a recent Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing, INL Deputy Assistant Secretary Margaret Nardi responded positively to Senator Ted Cruz’s inquiries about deepening US engagement with Somaliland. Nardi acknowledged that while the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) currently has no active programs in Somaliland, the nation is “well positioned to benefit from any upcoming US initiatives.”
This response came amid Senator Cruz’s robust advocacy for Somaliland, where he highlighted the nation’s strategic importance to US interests. Cruz emphasized Somaliland’s location along the Gulf of Aden—a vital global shipping route—and its contributions to maritime security, counterterrorism, and alignment with American allies, including Taiwan and Israel. He also noted Somaliland’s offers of military basing and critical mineral partnerships as key countermeasures to China’s growing influence in the region.
Cruz referenced his prior letter to President Trump pushing for formal recognition of Somaliland, pointing out that such advocacy had previously drawn swift condemnation from the Chinese Communist Party, underscoring the Somaliland’s value to US national security. The senator posed direct questions on potential tools for enhanced cooperation in maritime security and law enforcement to counter threats in the Horn of Africa.
Following the hearing, Ambassador Bashir Goth, Somaliland’s representative to the United States, publicly commended Senator Cruz via an X post from the Somaliland US mission: “Grateful for @SenTedCruz continued recognition of Somaliland’s contributions to regional security at today’s @SenateForeign hearing. As a committed partner in maritime security and counterterrorism, we look forward to expanded cooperation with the United States in advancing our shared interests in the Horn of Africa.”
Ambassador Goth, a seasoned diplomat with a background in journalism and public relations, has been instrumental in advancing Somaliland’s diplomatic efforts. His message reflects optimism for stronger bilateral ties.
This exchange highlights Somaliland’s ongoing push for greater international legitimacy and partnership with the US, bolstered by influential supporters like Senator Cruz and encouraging signals from officials like Nardi. As Somaliland navigates internal and regional complexities, such moments signal potential progress toward expanded US-Somaliland collaboration.
