In a compelling address to the House of Representatives, Somaliland’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hon. Abdirahman Dahir Adan, detailed significant strides made in the nation’s pursuit of international recognition. Speaking on Monday, the minister highlighted the implementation of the Foreign Service Law between January and June 2025 as a cornerstone achievement, establishing a modern diplomatic framework for Somaliland’s global representation.
The Foreign Service Law, described as a “critical pillar,” formalizes the structure of Somaliland’s embassies, consulates, and trade offices, while defining diplomats’ roles and responsibilities. Minister Adan emphasized that the legislation ensures Somaliland is prepared for recognition by creating a clear, legal framework for diplomatic operations. “The light of recognition is visible,” he declared, urging swift preparations to establish operational embassies and trained ambassadors for when the moment arrives.
“The objectives of this law are to guide our embassies, consulates, and permanent missions while safeguarding Somaliland’s national interests abroad,” Adan stated. He called on parliamentarians and government institutions to align with the ministry’s strategy, warning that “time is short” and urgent action is needed to ensure readiness.
The minister’s speech underscored Somaliland’s unwavering commitment to securing its place on the global stage. “If recognition comes tomorrow, we must have our systems, embassies, and diplomats ready,” he said, rallying support for accelerated efforts.
The address was met with optimism, as lawmakers expressed support for the ministry’s proactive approach. As Somaliland continues its diplomatic push, the nation remains focused on building a robust framework to achieve its long-sought goal of international recognition.
