Somaliland’s Foreign Minister, Hon.Abdirahman Dahir Adan, speaking about the agreement with Taiwan, stated that it focused on maritime security cooperation.
In an interview with BBC Somali, he said, “The agreement generally pertains to how we can collaborate on protecting the coasts of both countries, including advancements, training, exchange of ideas, and any advice or examples that the two nations could share.”
He added that the agreement was the culmination of prior understandings.“The agreement we went to Taiwan for was based on a mutual understanding previously signed between Taiwan and Somaliland, and we were finalizing it,” he said.
The minister emphasized that the agreement is highly valuable to his country, offering significant benefits.“It is of great benefit to us.
Maritime resources are extremely important to Somaliland, and if we cannot protect our resources, we cannot utilize them,” he said.
The minister noted that Somaliland needs to secure its coastline and is willing to enter agreements with any party that can assist, especially as a developing nation with many needs.
“We are not preoccupied with others, nor do we believe we have wronged anyone. Somaliland is a country, and we will work with those who align with our interests. We don’t see this as wronging China; we respect and wish them well,” he said.
Abdilahi Mohamed Bile, a professor of maritime security at a university in Hargeisa, believes the agreement is significant for Somaliland.
I believe this agreement is strategic, and Somaliland will gain a lot from it if implemented well,” said Abdilahi, adding that it holds benefits for Somaliland.
Somaliland can benefit from having its coastguard forces well-trained and equipped, enabling them to take control of Red Sea maritime security.”
Beyond maritime security, Abdilahi noted that Somaliland could also benefit from better understanding its marine resources.“Taiwan can help Somaliland obtain comprehensive and accurate data on its marine resources, whether it’s oil, minerals, or other important assets in the sea.”
