A high-level delegation from the Republic of Somaliland, led by Foreign Minister Hon. Abdirahman Dahir Adan Bakal, arrived in Taipei today for a five-day official visit aimed at deepening diplomatic, security, and economic cooperation between Somaliland and Taiwan. The delegation includes key figures such as the Minister of the Presidency, Hon. Khadar Hussein Abdi, the Commander of the Somaliland Coast Guard, General Ahmed Hurre Hariye, and the President’s Advisor on International Relations, Hon. Amb. Mohamed Haji.
Upon arrival, the delegation was warmly welcomed by Taiwan’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hon. Amb. François Chihchung Wu, alongside other senior Taiwanese officials. The reception also included Somaliland’s Ambassador to Taiwan, Amb. Mahmoud Adan Jama Galaal, and Taiwan’s Ambassador to Somaliland, Amb. Allen C. Lou, symbolizing the strong ties between the two nations.
The visit, described as a “milestone” in Somaliland-Taiwan relations, focuses on reinforcing the longstanding friendship and mutual cooperation that has grown since the establishment of representative offices in each other’s capitals. Discussions are expected to cover potential collaborations in defense, naval support, and investment opportunities in Somaliland’s natural resources, including oil, gas, and minerals.
Foreign Minister Bakal emphasized the shared democratic values and aspirations for international recognition that unite Somaliland and Taiwan, stating, “This visit strengthens the solid foundation of our sisterly relationship, built on mutual respect and shared goals.” Taiwanese officials echoed this sentiment, highlighting Taiwan’s commitment to supporting Somaliland’s development through capacity-building initiatives in healthcare, agriculture, and technology.
Over the next few days, the Somaliland delegation is scheduled to meet with Taiwanese President H.E. Lai Ching-te, Foreign Minister Hon. Lin Chia-lung, and other top officials to explore new avenues for collaboration. The visit is expected to culminate in agreements to further enhance bilateral ties, including potential energy and security cooperation.
This visit marks another step in the unique partnership between Somaliland and Taiwan, two nations that, despite lacking widespread international recognition, continue to forge a robust alliance based on shared values and strategic interests.
