MP Gavin Williamson, a senior ranking member of the British Parliament, has accused the Somali government of funding Al-Shabaab and Yemen’s Houthis.

He has also called on the United States to recognize Somaliland.

The MP, who strongly supported the US decision to suspend funding for the major US aid agency, the USAID, said the Somali government was using the agency’s alms and aid to channel funds to Al-Shabaab.

“USAID has been used by the Somali government to channel funds and support to Al-Shabaab. It is time to stop US taxpayers’ money from supporting a government that supports terrorism,” Gavin said on his X blog.

The MP also accused the Somali government of providing military and financial support to the Houthi group in Yemen.

He noted, “Somalia, through Al-Shabaab, is sending funds and military equipment to the Houthi group. Trump was right to carry out airstrikes in Somalia,” he said.

The MP called on US President Donald Trump to recognize Somaliland, which he described as one of the most democratic places in the region. “Recognize Somaliland, the most democratic country in the region, and stop US funding of Mogadishu, which supports terrorism,” he said.

Gavin Williamson is one of the MPs who strongly advocate for the recognition of Somaliland, having repeatedly presented arguments in the UK Parliament on the issue.
