Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi (Irro) and Vice President Mohamed Ali Aw Abdi have ordered the delivery of comprehensive food assistance to Ethiopian refugees displaced by recent violence and currently sheltering in Borama, the Minister of Resettlement and Humanitarian Affairs, Saleban Duale H. Jama, has announced.
Speaking during a humanitarian food distribution exercise, the minister said the presidential leadership had instructed the government to ensure that the displaced people received essential supplies and adequate care.
“The President and Vice President ordered that food supplies be delivered to these refugees,” he said.
The minister explained that his ministry had been working for six consecutive days to support members of the Oromo community affected by recent violence. The humanitarian response has included the provision of tents for shelter, blankets and comprehensive food packages to help meet their immediate needs.
He also appealed to residents of the Awdal region to welcome the displaced Ethiopians, describing them as brothers and sisters deserving compassion, solidarity and dignified treatment.
He emphasised that the Somaliland Government was prioritising their welfare and would continue working to ensure they received the necessary humanitarian assistance.
The food distribution was conducted on Wednesday by the Minister of Resettlement, accompanied by the Deputy Minister, the ministry’s Director General and officials from the Somaliland Disaster Management Agency.
The Ethiopian refugees are currently being accommodated at Borama Airport grounds, where the government has arranged temporary shelter and humanitarian support following their displacement by the recent unrest.
