Modern Voter Registration Drive Set to Transform Somaliland’s Electoral System

The President H.E. Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi (Irro) held on Saturday a high-level meeting with the Republic of Somaliland’s National Electoral Commission (NEC) to accelerate the rollout of a new modern voter registration system, a key initiative aimed at strengthening the country’s democratic institutions and enhancing public confidence in future elections.
During the meeting, the NEC presented the President with a comprehensive implementation plan, outlining the technical framework, operational procedures, and timeline for the nationwide registration exercise.
According to the commission, the new voter registration process will be implemented across all regions and districts of Somaliland.
NEC officials explained that the upgraded system will leverage modern technology and advanced registration methods to create a secure, transparent, and accurate voter database that aligns with international standards. The initiative is expected to improve electoral integrity while making it easier for all eligible Somaliland citizens to register and exercise their right to vote.
President Irro praised the Commission for its commitment to strengthening Somaliland’s electoral system and encouraged its members to continue their efforts to ensure that every eligible voter has access to the new registration process.
“The establishment of a modern voter registration system is a cornerstone of strengthening democracy, protecting citizens’ rights, and guaranteeing free, fair, and credible elections,” the President emphasized during the meeting.
The President also reaffirmed his government’s commitment to providing the financial resources necessary for the successful implementation of the nationwide voter registration programme.
The meeting concluded with both sides agreeing to enhance cooperation among all relevant institutions, accelerate technical and administrative preparations, and maximize the use of modern technology throughout the registration process.
The initiative marks another significant step in Somaliland’s continued efforts to strengthen its democratic governance and uphold its reputation for conducting peaceful, credible, and widely trusted elections.
