A major step forward in advancing digital education has been achieved after the Republic of Somaliland’s Ministry of Education, Early Childhood Development and Science officially received a consignment of educational tablets from UNICEF, aimed at expanding access to quality learning resources across Somaliland.

The tablets, which are preloaded with educational lessons and powered by solar energy, will be distributed to 61 schools, providing students and teachers with innovative tools to support teaching and learning, particularly in areas where access to electricity and educational materials remains limited.

The handover ceremony also highlighted UNICEF’s continued commitment to strengthening Somaliland’s education sector through its support for the distribution of Alternative Basic Education (ABE) curriculum textbooks to schools across the country.

Education officials described the initiative as a significant milestone in efforts to improve learning outcomes and modernize classroom instruction. The project is expected to enhance access to educational content, promote digital literacy, and support students in underserved communities.

Speaking at the event, the Minister of Education Prof Ismail Duale Yusuf, expressed gratitude to UNICEF for its longstanding partnership and unwavering support for Somaliland’s education system. The Minister noted that the provision of solar-powered learning devices and curriculum materials will play an important role in improving the quality of education and expanding opportunities for thousands of students.

The initiative forms part of broader efforts to strengthen educational infrastructure, increase access to learning resources, and ensure that children across Somaliland benefit from a more inclusive and technology-enabled education system.

As Somaliland continues to invest in educational development, officials say partnerships with international organizations such as UNICEF remain vital in helping schools adapt to modern learning methods and prepare students for the future.
