H.E. Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro delivered a bold and emotional address during Somaliland’s 18 May Independence Day celebrations, calling for national unity, economic transformation, and renewed international recognition efforts as the nation marked what he described as a historic turning point.
Speaking before massive crowds and international guests representing 25 countries, President Irro said this year’s celebration — held under the theme “Recognition and Resilience” — symbolized Somaliland’s determination to secure its rightful place among the world’s nations.
The president reflected on Somaliland’s 1991 declaration in Burao, where leaders decided to restore Somaliland’s independence following the collapse of its union with Somalia. He described the union as a “failed experiment” and urged the African Union to reconsider the recommendations made during its 2005 fact-finding mission on Somaliland’s case.
In one of the most talked-about moments of the speech, Irro claimed that the president of Israel was receiving Somaliland’s ambassador, presenting the development as evidence of Somaliland’s growing diplomatic visibility and international engagement.
The president also appealed directly to Somaliland’s global diaspora, encouraging Somalilanders living abroad to become ambassadors for their country by promoting Somaliland’s achievements, stability, and recognition campaign in the nations where they reside.
Throughout the speech, Irro emphasized the importance of unity and warned against political divisions that could weaken Somaliland’s sovereignty and progress.
“Our future depends on preserving our shared nationhood,” the president declared, expressing confidence that Somaliland could become “one of the richest countries in the world” through peace, investment, and strategic development.
Looking ahead, Irro outlined the government’s major priorities for 2026, including:
- Securing international recognition
- Strengthening the national economy
- Attracting foreign investment
- Modernizing Somaliland’s armed forces
- Enhancing border security and national defense
He said Somaliland has entered a new phase of state-building and economic development and is positioning itself to become a key gateway connecting Africa with global markets.
Addressing the wider Somali community, the president reaffirmed that Somaliland is “a distinct nation” that has emerged among the Somali people through resilience, democratic governance, and self-determination.
Irro also urged African leaders to reflect on the dangers of forcing together countries and governments that cannot coexist peacefully, arguing that Somaliland has already fulfilled the standards expected of a democratic and responsible state with clear borders, rule of law, and political stability.
The president concluded by praising Somaliland citizens at home and abroad for their patriotism and sacrifice, saying their determination continues to strengthen the nation’s cause.
“Today is especially meaningful,” Irro said, “because this marks the first May 18 commemoration celebrated as a recognized nation.”
