I am directing this urgent appeal directly to the President of the Republic of Somaliland H.E. Abdirahman Abdillahi Irro.
Dear Mr. President,
On behalf of the pastoralist communities living in the Eastern Regions, particularly, Saraar Region, I respectfully request your immediate attention and intervention. These communities have not received any rainfall, leading to a severe and devastating drought across the region. Both the people and their livestock are facing the most difficult conditions of their lives, with only a few scattered spots offering small water catchments that the animals have been able to reach.
The pastoralists of Saraar have begun migrating in search of pasture with whatever means they have. Those who could move have relocated to parts of the Sahil and Marodi-Jeh regions. Families who managed to rent vehicles have loaded their livestock and moved there in a desperate bid for survival. However, even in these new areas, there is little to no grazing land available, leaving the animals without sufficient pasture.
Mr. President, I earnestly call on you to provide urgent assistance to these suffering communities. Please support them with transportation — whether using vehicles from the national armed forces or any other means the government can mobilize — to help them complete their migration. Furthermore, I urge the government to extend immediate relief in the form of tents, food supplies, and any other aid that can be made available to these vulnerable families.
These are our own citizens who are in desperate need and are turning to their government for support during this time of great hardship.
