Israeli security experts are hailing the recent recognition of Somaliland’s independence as a potential breakthrough for enhancing Israel’s defensive and offensive capabilities, particularly against threats from Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels.
In a detailed analysis, Iky Hazan and Dr. Yehoshua Kalisky, a senior researcher at Israel’s Institute for National Security Studies (INSS), argue that deepened ties with Somaliland could provide Israel with significant strategic advantages. The experts point to reports from last year indicating Somaliland’s willingness—mediated by the United Arab Emirates—to host an Israeli military presence in exchange for diplomatic recognition, economic aid, and sovereignty acknowledgment.
A foothold in Somaliland, located on the Gulf of Aden opposite Yemen, would dramatically shorten operational distances for Israel. Strikes against Houthi targets, currently over 2,000 kilometers away, could be conducted from just several hundred kilometers, reducing logistical burdens and enabling faster responses.
Defensively, the experts emphasize the value of deploying advanced radar and sensors in the region for early warning against missile launches. This could allow intercepts during the vulnerable boost phase, when missiles are slower and more susceptible to destruction. Debris from such interceptions would likely fall in hostile territory, minimizing risks to Israeli civilians and infrastructure.
The analysis also notes operational flexibility: failed interceptions would provide more reaction time, and early neutralizations could avoid costly civilian sheltering measures in Israel.
Looking ahead, Hazan and Kalisky suggest emerging technologies—like advanced interceptors, airborne high-power lasers such as evolved Iron Beam systems—could make boost-phase intercepts more viable in the coming years. Combined with Somaliland’s strategic location, this could markedly upgrade Israel’s multilayered defense against ballistic threats from distant adversaries.
Israel formally recognized Somaliland as an independent state on December 26, 2025, becoming the first country to do so since the nation’s 1991 restoration of independence from Somalia.
