The Central Bank of the Republic of Somaliland has implemented a proposal previously put forward by Abdirisaq Shabeel, a citizen with limited mobility, who requested that the bank’s management facilitate access for people with disabilities using mobility aids. In response to this request, the Central Bank has introduced new, modern infrastructure designed for people with disabilities, enabling them to easily access the bank’s facilities and obtain the services they need.

This step is part of the bank’s community care and service equality program, which aims to ensure that every citizen, regardless of their physical condition, has access to modern and equitable banking services.

The Deputy Governor of the Bank, Hamze Khaire, stated that the initiative introduced by the Central Bank was a much-needed step that had not been adequately addressed before. He noted that Abdirisaq’s proposal prompted the bank to take action and prepare the necessary infrastructure.

Additionally, Abdirisaq expressed his gratitude to the bank’s management for accepting his suggestion to create a system that allows people with special needs to access banking services.

Previously, this issue posed a significant challenge for individuals with disabilities, as they were often served outside the bank’s premises due to their inability to enter the building.

The Central Bank’s initiative reflects its commitment to fulfilling its responsibility toward a segment of society that had previously been excluded from fully participating in the banking services offered.
