In a heartening display of international collaboration, Abaarso School welcomed Kelsie Lemon, Vice-President of International Cooperation and Programs at the Canadian Red Cross (CRC), alongside representatives from the Somaliland Red Crescent Society (SRCS), to celebrate the inspiring progress of the student-led Abaarso Garden. This visit, occurring last week marks a significant milestone in the Growing Futures project, a joint initiative aimed at enhancing food security and fostering sustainable education in Somaliland.

The Abaarso Garden, a vibrant hub of student innovation, has transformed into more than just a green space—it’s a thriving classroom where young minds learn leadership, sustainability, and resilience. Through workshops, resources, and hands-on efforts, students have cultivated crops that bolster local food supplies, addressing the nation’s ongoing challenges with drought and malnutrition.

The visit showcased the garden’s success, with lush vegetable patches and a newly installed water tower symbolizing hope and self-sufficiency. Kelsie Lemon, bringing over 20 years of humanitarian expertise, praised the students’ dedication, stating, “This project is a testament to the power of youth in building a sustainable future. The Canadian Red Cross is proud to support such inspiring initiatives alongside our partners at SRCS.”

The SRCS, a cornerstone of humanitarian aid in Somaliland since 1963, has played a pivotal role by providing training and resources, further strengthening community resilience. The collaboration has yielded remarkable results, with the garden serving over 380 students with nutritious meals, as highlighted by local volunteer Muna, who prepares food daily.

This effort aligns with broader trends, with a 2023 Journal of Environmental Education study noting a 30% increase in ecological awareness among students engaged in similar projects. The Growing Futures initiative, supported by international grants, continues to set a model for education and food security in arid regions, as noted in a 2022 ReliefWeb report on Somalia’s strategies.

This visit not only celebrates the garden’s achievements but also reinforces a growing partnership between Abaarso School, the SRCS, and the Canadian Red Cross, promising a brighter, greener future for Somaliland’s youth and communities.
