In a major boost to its aviation and economic infrastructure, the Republic of Somaliland has signed a landmark $70 million agreement to modernize Egal International Airport in Dubai. The deal, announced by Presidential Spokesperson Eng. Hussein Adan Cige (Deyr), marks the largest single investment in the country’s civil aviation sector to date and underscores Somaliland’s growing openness to global business and partnerships.

The agreement was inked by Somaliland’s Minister of Civil Aviation, Hon. Fu’ad Ahmed Nuh, and representatives from the International Maharat Investment Company, a Dubai-based firm specializing in infrastructure development. Finalized at the Dubai International Financial Center, the project aims to upgrade the airport’s facilities, including runway extensions, new terminals, enhanced security systems, and modern navigational technology. These improvements are expected to accommodate larger aircraft, increase passenger capacity, and position Hargeisa as a key gateway for regional trade and tourism in the Horn of Africa.

“This investment is a game-changer for Somaliland’s economy,” said Eng. Deyr in a statement shared on social media and translated by the Somaliland News Agency (SOLNA). “It reflects our unwavering commitment to developing world-class infrastructure and forging deeper ties with the international community. Somaliland is open for business, ready for investment, and eager for meaningful global cooperation.”

The deal comes amid heightened international interest in Somaliland’s stable governance and strategic location. Maharat Investment Company, known for projects across the Middle East and Africa, selected Somaliland due to its business-friendly environment and untapped potential. “This partnership will not only modernize our skies but also elevate Somaliland’s profile on the global stage,” said Minister Nuh during the signing ceremony.

Experts predict the upgraded airport could handle up to 1 million passengers annually by 2030, up from current levels of around 200,000. It may also pave the way for direct flights to major hubs like Dubai, Istanbul, and Addis Ababa, further integrating Somaliland into global supply chains.

As construction is set to begin in early 2026, this development signals a new chapter for Somaliland’s aspirations for economic self-sufficiency and international recognition.
