In a significant step toward strengthening diplomatic ties, the Somaliland House of Representatives warmly welcomed Mr. Kamaal Hussein Dirie, a Kenyan parliamentary candidate for the Kamukunji constituency, during a special session held on Tuesday.

The meeting, led by the Speaker of the House, Hon. Yaasiin Maxamuud Xiir Faraton, underscored Somaliland’s commitment to fostering international partnerships, particularly with Kenya. Mr. Dirie, a politician of Somaliland origin known for his vocal support of Somaliland’s quest for international recognition, was greeted with enthusiasm by the House.

The session, attended by Deputy Speaker Said Mire, several Members of Parliament, and other officials, took place at the Speaker’s office in Hargeisa. Discussions centered on enhancing bilateral relations between Somaliland and Kenya, with a focus on mutual support in regional stability and democratic governance.

The Somaliland House of Representatives, a cornerstone of the nation’s democratic system since its first direct elections in 2005, highlighted the importance of such engagements in promoting Somaliland’s aspirations on the global stage. The meeting also served as a platform to explore avenues for deeper collaboration, including the relaunch of the Kenya-Somaliland Parliamentary Caucus, which was revitalized in Nairobi in August 2023.

Hon. Faraton praised Mr. Dirie’s candidacy and advocacy, expressing hope that his potential role in the Kenyan Parliament could further amplify Somaliland’s voice. Dirie, who is also vying for the Speaker’s position in Kenya, reiterated his commitment to advocating for stronger ties between the two nations.

This historic meeting marks another milestone in Somaliland’s ongoing efforts to build strategic alliances in the Horn of Africa, as the nation continues its pursuit of international recognition and regional cooperation.
