The Republic of Somaliland’s Upper House of Parliament (Guurti) has expressed profound gratitude to U.S. Senator Ted Cruz for his recent call to President Donald Trump to formally recognize Somaliland as an independent state within its 1960 borders.

In a letter dated August 15, 2025, Hon. Abdikadir Mohamed Hassan, Chairperson of the Guurti’s Foreign Affairs & International Cooperation Committee, praised Cruz’s advocacy as a “principled and compelling” step toward advancing Somaliland’s decades-long quest for international recognition.

Hassan’s letter, written on behalf of the Guurti—a traditional elder-based legislative body integral to Somaliland’s governance—emphasized the moral and strategic imperative of recognizing Somaliland. “Your leadership in championing this cause strengthens Somaliland’s position and advances U.S. national security interests in a region of critical importance,” Hassan wrote, commending Cruz’s focus on Somaliland’s resilience against external pressures, including those from the Chinese Communist Party.

The Guurti’s endorsement follows widespread celebrations across Somaliland, where leaders, scholars, and citizens have voiced optimism about Cruz’s intervention. Somaliland’s Foreign Minister, Abdirahman Dahir Adan, echoed this sentiment, stating, “Senator Cruz’s clear understanding of Somaliland’s statehood and strategic importance reflects the value we bring to the U.S. and the world.” Social media platforms in Somaliland have been flooded with messages of thanks to Cruz, with many urging President Trump to act swiftly.

Senator Cruz, Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Africa and Global Health Policy, urged President Trump on August 14, 2025, to grant Somaliland formal recognition, citing its strategic location along the Gulf of Aden, its consistent democratic record since 2003, and its contributions to regional security through counterterrorism and anti-piracy efforts. Cruz also highlighted Somaliland’s diplomatic alignment with U.S. interests, including its hosting of a Taiwanese Representative Office in Hargeisa and support for the Abraham Accords.
