Today, August 14, 2025, is a day that will be remembered in the hearts of Somalilanders
around the world. U.S. Senator Ted Cruz has written directly to President Donald J. Trump, urging the United States to formally recognize the Republic of Somaliland as an independent state within its 1960 borders.
Senator Cruz’s letter, rooted in historical truth and strategic clarity, acknowledges what we as Somalilanders have known for decades: that Somaliland has been a stable, selfgoverning, democratic nation since reclaiming its independence in 1991.
He praised our peaceful elections since 2003, our strong voter turnout, and our peaceful transitions of power—values that echo the democratic principles cherished by both Somaliland and the United States.
He reminded President Trump—and the world—that Somaliland is a critical security and diplomatic partner to the United States. Strategically located along the Gulf of Aden, near one of the busiest maritime corridors in the world, Somaliland has capable armed forces and actively contributes to counterterrorism and anti-piracy operations.
Senator Cruz also highlighted our diplomatic courage: welcoming a Taiwanese Representative Office in Hargeisa, , and proposing to host a U.S. military presence while offering critical mineral partnerships to strengthen American supply chains.
These are not just symbolic gestures—they are commitments that place Somaliland firmly on the side of democracy, freedom, and strategic partnership.
Senator Cruz also warned of the mounting pressure from adversaries, including the Chinese Communist Party’s economic and diplomatic coercion, and the unfortunate role of the Somali government in undermining our sovereignty.
Despite these threats, Somaliland remains steadfast in its commitment to the U.S. and its allies.
As Chairman of the Waddani Party in Minnesota-USA, I thank Senator Ted Cruz for his principled stand, Representative Scott Perry and all other lawmakers who support Somaliland’s recognition, and President Donald J. Trump for his willingness to examine this matter with courage and vision.
This moment is no longer a distant hope—it is fast approaching. In September 2025, our
newly elected President H.E. Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi “Irro” will make an official visit to Washington, D.C.
This trip is more than ceremonial—it is an opportunity for direct engagement at the highest level, to solidify Somaliland’s place among America’s trusted allies.
To my fellow Somalilanders across the United States: now is the time to unite, organize, and prepare. Recognition will bring responsibilities as well as pride. We must be ready to support our homeland politically, economically, and diplomatically when this historic milestone is achieved.
Senator Cruz’s letter today is a bold step forward, a signal that the United States is ready to acknowledge the reality on the ground. We, as Somalilanders in America, must match that courage with our unity and our readiness.
The dawn of Somaliland’s recognition is breaking—let us stand ready to greet it together.
