The Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Somaliland and the Shaqo-Doon Agency convened a significant meeting today at the Ministry’s headquarters in Hargeisa to discuss the advancement of the SOM-REP project. The initiative focuses on strengthening livelihood infrastructure, boosting agricultural productivity, and fostering community integration across Somaliland’s regions.

The meeting was attended by the Minister of Agriculture Hon. Mohamoud Ege Yusuf, the Director General Eng Abdirisak Ahmed Gaas, senior experts from the Ministry, and high-ranking officials from the Shaqo-Doon Agency. Discussions centered on strategies to enhance the SOM-REP project, ensuring that its initiatives align with the real needs of Somaliland’s farming communities in the regions where the project operates.

Key topics included improving agricultural output, addressing challenges such as water scarcity and limited investment, and promoting sustainable practices to build resilience against climate shocks. The SOM-REP project, known for its community-based approaches like Natural Resource Management (NRM) and Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), aims to empower local farmers and enhance food security.

Both parties emphasized the importance of aligning project activities with Somaliland’s broader agricultural development goals, including the recently launched 2025–2030 Strategic Plan for Agricultural Development.

The meeting concluded with a commitment to further refine the SOM-REP project’s implementation, with plans for ongoing coordination to ensure tangible benefits for Somaliland’s farming communities. This development marks a significant step toward transforming the nation’s agricultural sector and reducing reliance on food imports.
