Ministry of Labor Finalizes Consultations on Landmark Disability Rights Law

The Ministry of Labor, Social Affairs, and Family concluded a week-long consultation in Hargeisa to finalize the draft Law on the Rights and Care of Persons with Special Needs in the Republic of Somaliland. Led by Director General Abdishakur Ismail Hussein, the meeting convened organizations for persons with disabilities, civil society groups, legal experts, and community representatives to review and refine the proposed legislation.

Participants provided valuable insights and recommendations to ensure the law meets the unique needs of individuals with disabilities. Director General Hussein emphasized that these contributions will be incorporated into the draft to create a robust, inclusive framework before its submission to the Council of Ministers for approval.“

This law is a significant step toward ensuring the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities are upheld,” Hussein said. “We are committed to crafting legislation that reflects their needs and aspirations.”

The draft law is poised to mark a milestone in Somaliland’s efforts to promote inclusivity and provide comprehensive support for persons with disabilities. Stakeholders expressed optimism that, once enacted, the law will establish a precedent for equitable care and opportunities throughout the nation.
