Director General of Somaliland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mr. Mohamed Abdirahman, held a productive meeting with a high-level delegation from the Arab-African Supreme Council for Economy, led by its Director, Dr. Hani Hassan Abu Zeid. The discussions, focused on exploring investment collaboration opportunities, signal Somaliland’s proactive approach to strengthening its economic ties and attracting foreign investment.
The nine-member delegation engaged with Somaliland officials to discuss potential partnerships in key sectors such as infrastructure, agriculture, livestock, energy, and minerals. The meeting underscores Somaliland’s ambition to position itself as a stable and attractive destination for international investment, leveraging its strategic location along the Gulf of Aden and its relative stability in the Horn of Africa.
Mr. Mohamed Abdirahman emphasized Somaliland’s commitment to fostering mutually beneficial economic partnerships. “We are not seeking aid, but rather building true partnerships for joint economic growth and employment opportunities,” he stated, highlighting the nation’s vision for sustainable development. The talks also explored how Somaliland’s Berbera Port, a critical regional trade hub, could serve as a cornerstone for enhanced economic cooperation.
The Arab-African Supreme Council for Economy, known for promoting Arab-African solidarity through sustainable investment, expressed keen interest in Somaliland’s potential. Dr. Hani Hassan Abu Zeid noted the nation’s democratic resilience and economic prospects, particularly in light of Somaliland’s recent peaceful presidential election and its growing diplomatic engagements with nations like the United States.
This meeting marks a pivotal moment for Somaliland as it seeks to expand its international economic footprint, despite lacking formal recognition as a sovereign state. The government’s focus on youth empowerment, with 70% of its population under 30, and its strategic partnerships with global players, positions Somaliland as an emerging hub for investment in the Horn of Africa.
