The Somaliland Ministry of Education and Science, led by Minister Prof. Ismail Ducale Yusuf, officially launched the Smart Climate Change Education Initiative, in a ceremony held in Hargeysa today.
The initiative aims to integrate climate change resilience into the education system by developing climate-adaptive infrastructure and embedding climate education within the national curriculum to foster greater public awareness.
The event was attended by key figures, including Deputy Minister of Education Mr. Mohamed Yusuf Ibrahim (Faacul), Director General of the Ministry Mr. Abdirahman Husen Hirsi, and representatives from the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, the Ministry of Public Works, the National Disaster Preparedness and Food Reserve Agency, and Save the Children.
Speakers emphasized the project’s role in aligning education with climate challenges to build national resilience.
Prof. Yusuf highlighted the initiative as a groundbreaking step, referencing the Daallo Mountain disaster as a stark example of climate change impacts.
The project will focus on creating climate-resilient school infrastructure and enhancing environmental education to prepare future generations.
The launch has garnered attention as a proactive move by Somaliland to address climate change through education, aligning with global sustainable development goals.
