In a significant step toward empowering women in agriculture, Eng. Abdirizak Gass, Director General of the Somaliland Ministry of Agricultural Development, warmly welcomed a group of 15 female farmers from Oodweyne and Burao at the Ministry’s headquarters in Hargeisa.
The group embarked on an educational tour to enhance their farming expertise and market knowledge. The women visited agricultural fields in Gabiley and Arabsiyo, including a farm established by the Taiwanese Embassy’s ICDF agency near Arabsiyo, as well as Hargeisa’s bustling vegetable market.
The initiative, part of the Support for Agricultural Production and Quality Assurance (SPQA) project led by GIZ, focused on fostering knowledge exchange to boost agricultural productivity and market access for female farmers.
Led by Fardows Osman Diiriye, a senior GIZ official, the tour aimed to equip the farmers with practical insights into modern farming techniques and effective market strategies.
“This visit is a vital opportunity for our female farmers to learn innovative practices and strengthen their role in Somaliland’s agricultural sector,” said Eng. Gass.
The SPQA project continues to bridge gaps in agricultural development, empowering women to drive sustainable growth and contribute to food security in Somaliland.
