A devastating wildfire is raging in the Daalo Mountains near Erigavo, Sanaag Region, threatening Somaliland’s biodiversity and local livelihoods. Described as the largest fire in the region’s history by Minister of State for Internal Affairs and Security, Abdirashid Mohamed Ahmed, the blaze has prompted a unified response from military, police, and local communities working tirelessly to contain it.
Director General Mukhtar Abdi Jama of the Ministry of Resettlement and Humanitarian Affairs called it a “major disaster,” urging immediate community and international support to protect the region’s pristine ecosystem.
Minister of Environment Abdullahi Jama Osman confirmed that fire brigades and volunteers are battling the fire, which has spread from Daallo to Dowga Tabca, but the rugged terrain and limited equipment are major challenges.
The Daalo Mountains, a cherished ecological hotspot, are at risk of losing unique flora and fauna. The government is appealing to international organizations, NGOs, businesses, and youth for technical and financial aid.
