Traditional leaders and intellectuals from the Awdal & Selel regions held a press conference in Borama to address recent divisive and inflammatory rhetoric on social media, which they deemed unacceptable. They urged Somaliland’s security agencies to take firm action against those threatening the stability of Awdal and Somaliland as a whole.
A traditional leader stated, “In recent days, we have seen individuals making unreasonable statements not typical of this region. No one can undermine Awdal’s peace through words or actions while we are here. We urge them to stop, or we will support the government in taking legal measures. Here is Awdal, here is Somaliland, and whoever opposes have no grounds.”
The leaders emphasized Awdal’s historical significance as the birthplace and foundation of Somaliland, underscoring its vital contributions to the nation’s development. They vowed to reject any attempts to hinder its progress.
They also called on residents of Awdal and Salal to actively participate in the upcoming May 18 national day celebrations. Additionally, they encouraged the community to prepare a warm welcome for Somaliland’s Vice President, Ambassador Mohamed Ali Aw Abdi, who is expected to visit the western regions soon. One leader remarked, “We will receive the Vice President with dignity. We call on every person from Awdal to prepare for his reception.”
