May 18 is a national holiday commemorating the 1991 declaration of independence, marked by flag displays, patriotic events, and community celebrations, especially among youth and schools.

The month of May begins with the captivating beauty of the Tawheed flag, proudly displayed everywhere, evoking a sense of joy and signaling unique, significant events for the Somaliland community. Unlike other times, you witness a society that typically didn’t gather at event venues now flocking to them, celebrating and sharing in festivities together.

City streets, public transport, business hubs, government offices, and the broader community all reflect a departure from the ordinary, marking a pivotal moment for both the nation and its people. May stands out in Somaliland as a time unlike any other—a period to honor the flag, express patriotism, and showcase love for the country to its citizens and the world. It’s also a moment to affirm the community’s existence and its aspirations.

While the importance of May 18th is deeply cherished by Somalilanders, today I focus on the patriotism and national pride instilled in the youth through the country’s schools, which launch the month with fervor and devotion to their flag and land.

The public’s attention is drawn to students from schools across Somaliland, adorned in the vibrant national flag. When they align in orderly rows, holding the flag high, it creates a striking and inspiring image. Their faces radiate passion for patriotism and love for their nation, reflecting their excitement for the start of May and their pride in showcasing national identity while raising the Tawheed flag.

The community is particularly impressed by the teachers and school officials of the Republic of Somaliland, who play a significant role in encouraging students to express that this time is distinct. As May marks 34 years since Somaliland reclaimed its independence, the youth in schools, supported by teachers and the Ministry of Education and Training, have amazed the public with their vibrant displays of national pride and their commemoration of May 18th.
