The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Republic of Somaliland, Hon. Abdirahman Daahir Aadan Bakaal, returned to the country after an extended visit to the United States, where he engaged in efforts related to Somaliland’s pursuit of international recognition, a goal the nation has been striving for since reclaiming its independence.
Upon landing at Egal International Airport in the capital, Hargeisa, the Foreign Minister was warmly received by the Minister of Information, Awareness, and Culture, Hon. Ahmed Yasin Sh. Ali Ayaanle; the Minister of Aviation and Airport Development, Hon. Fu’ad Ahmed Nuh; the Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Mohamed Abdirahman; protocol officials from the Ministry; and a large number of other dignitaries and guests.
During his stay in the United States, Minister Bakaal met with the Somaliland diaspora community and various organizations supporting Somaliland’s independence cause. He also held discussions with diplomats advocating for Somaliland’s recognition by the international community.
The President of the United States had previously announced his intention to take a leading role in recognizing Somaliland, a move that, if realized, could open doors for other nations to fully recognize Somaliland.
In conclusion, since declaring its restored independence in 1991, Somaliland has made persistent efforts to convince the world that it is a fully-fledged nation, meeting all necessary criteria, including having a constitution, flag, national institutions, and clearly defined borders.
