Government to mitigate surplus farm produce imports that hurt local farmers

The Minister of Agriculture Development of the Republic of Somaliland Hon. Ahmed Mohamed Habane, said that they are making a plan to stop the crops coming from outside the country that are crippling the production of farmers in the country.

The minister noted that precarious moments when bumper harvests occur within the country should not be the time when surplus subsistence farm produce are imported.

He lamented that the trend only stunted the growth of the farming industry in the country hence ought to be mitigated.

Hon. Habane revealed that his ministry and the treasury have a plan to alleviate the plight of local farmers and ally pertinent issues that catalyze and compound the issues.

He said that a national contingency plan of even hiking import taxes at peak harvesting seasons would be put in place.
