The agency has informed the Somaliland community that the shampoo products containing Benzene are limited to dry shampoos only, and are not sold or available in the country.

A press statement released by the Somaliland Quality Control Commission stated as follows:-

The Somaliland quality control Commission informs the public not to use certain Dove, Nexxus, Suave, TIGI, and TRESemmé aerosol dry shampoos because of the potential presence of benzene, a chemical that can cause cancer.

Somaliland quality control Commission’s mandate is to provide for the testing on behalf of the government, locally imported manufactured and imported commodities to determine whether such commodities comply with the provisions of laws dealing with standards of quality or description.

They include products such as Dove Dry Shampoo Volume and Fullness, Dove Dry Shampoo Fresh Coconut, Nexxus Dry Shampoo Refreshing Mist, and Suave Professionals Dry Shampoo Refresh and Revive.

Benzene is a human carcinogen. Exposure to benzene can occur by inhalation, orally, and through the skin, and it can result in cancers including leukemia and blood cancer, according to the recall notice.
