The House of Representatives of the Republic of Somaliland has concluded the second day of public consultations on women’s representation in local councils and proposed amendments to the General Elections Law, Law No. 91/2023, with media representatives contributing their perspectives and recommendations.

The consultation meeting, held at the House of Representatives headquarters in Hargeisa, was officially closed by the First Deputy Speaker and Acting Speaker of the House, Hon. Said Mire Farah (Giire).

Organised by the House Committee on Internal Affairs, Security and Defence, alongside the Gender Advisory Office, the meeting brought together representatives from various sectors of Somaliland’s media, providing them with an opportunity to share their views, recommendations and proposals on the issues under consideration.

Discussions focused on the importance of ensuring women’s representation in local councils, the challenges women face in participating in leadership and decision-making processes, and the proposed amendments to the General Elections Law.

Participants also discussed the media’s responsibility in promoting public awareness, disseminating accurate information and strengthening public understanding of electoral processes and women’s representation in elected institutions.

The consultations form part of the parliamentary engagement process aimed at gathering public and stakeholder input on women’s political participation and the proposed changes to Somaliland’s electoral legal framework.
