The Minister of Health Development of the Republic of Somaliland, Dr. Hussein Bashir Hirsi, has held high-level talks with senior executives of Burjeel Holdings to accelerate the development of the Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Referral Hospital in Burao, a major healthcare project expected to expand access to specialised medical services in the country’s eastern regions.

The meeting took place in Abu Dhabi during the minister’s official working visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), with discussions focusing on speeding up construction, enhancing the quality of planned medical services, and ensuring the hospital meets international healthcare standards.

The proposed facility is expected to become a modern referral centre offering a range of specialised medical services to residents of Burao, the Togdheer region, and surrounding areas.

Minister Hirsi was accompanied by Idil Ismail Muse, Director of the Planning and Policy Department at the Ministry of Health Development.

Burjeel Holdings was represented by senior executives, including Safeer Ahamed, Group Chief Operating Officer; Hamad Al Hosni, Chief Executive Officer for International Partnerships; Dr. Mujtaba Ali Khan, CEO of Burjeel Medical City; Eng. Sobhith, Head of International Projects; and Eng. Jwana, Senior Director of International Healthcare Operations.

The talks centred on advancing the hospital’s construction and preparing for the delivery of high-quality healthcare services across multiple medical specialities. The discussions also addressed the importance of ensuring that the facility’s capacity and services are aligned with the healthcare needs of Somaliland’s population.

Minister Hirsi emphasised the need to align the hospital’s development with national healthcare priorities, highlighting the importance of close cooperation between the ministry and Burjeel Holdings in delivering the project.

The partnership is expected to contribute to the expansion of specialised healthcare services and strengthen the capacity of Somaliland’s healthcare system.

The Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Referral Hospital is among the key projects aimed at upgrading Somaliland’s healthcare infrastructure. Once completed and operational, it is expected to improve access to specialised treatment for communities in Burao, across the Togdheer region, and in neighbouring areas, potentially reducing the need for patients to travel elsewhere to obtain certain medical services.

The ministry’s discussions with Burjeel Holdings underscore the importance of continued coordination between the government and its partners to advance the project and establish a modern healthcare facility capable of addressing the region’s growing medical needs.
