Somaliland’s Ministry of Livestock and Rural Development and the University of Hargeisa are exploring plans to establish a centre focused on improving livestock and agricultural production, advancing food technology and strengthening the country’s food security.
The initiative was discussed during a meeting held between Somaliland’s Minister of Livestock and Rural Development, Dr. Omar Shucayb Mohamed, and a University of Hargeisa delegation led by the university’s president, Dr. Mohamed Sulub, and Dr. Mukhtar Hariir, head of the Centre for Food Production and Technology.
The minister was accompanied by Deputy Minister Ali Ahmed Abdi Ali Cantar.
The meeting presented the proposed centre as a strategic initiative to connect livestock and agricultural production with higher education, scientific research, innovation and community services.
The centre is expected to contribute to strengthening food security, expanding scientific knowledge and research, and developing innovative solutions to address challenges affecting Somaliland’s productive sectors.
The initiative also seeks to respond to the growing need to strengthen Somaliland’s resilience to climate change while accelerating economic growth through the application of knowledge, technology and the development of domestic resources.
The proposed facility is envisaged as a collaborative platform bringing together government institutions, universities and stakeholders in the livestock and agricultural sectors. Its approach would link academic research and technological innovation with practical production needs and wider community development.
The discussions underscore the importance of cooperation between government institutions and higher education in addressing food production challenges, improving productivity and supporting Somaliland’s long-term economic development.
