Republic of Somaliland’s Ministry of Information and Culture has stepped up its call for media organizations and journalists to comply with licensing and registration requirements, as senior officials stress the importance of distinguishing legally accredited journalists from individuals allegedly using the media profession as a cover.
Somaliland’s Deputy Minister of Information, Muse Askar Guuleed, expressed appreciation to media outlets that have obtained official operating licenses and completed their registration with the Ministry.
“We thank you for obtaining these licenses and registering with the Ministry,” Muse Askar said.
The Deputy Minister’s remarks came as the government continues efforts to formalize the media sector and ensure that media organizations operating in Somaliland meet established legal and regulatory requirements.
Meanwhile, Somaliland’s Minister of Information, Barkhad Jama Hersi Batun, emphasized the need to distinguish between journalists who operate within the law and individuals who may seek to conceal other activities under the banner of journalism.
“There must be a distinction between a journalist who has legal authorization and someone who is hiding behind journalism,” Batun said.
The Minister also stressed that national security is a shared responsibility, underscoring the need for cooperation between the media, government institutions and the wider public.
The government’s position comes amid renewed efforts to strengthen regulation and professional standards within Somaliland’s media sector, while licensed media organizations are being encouraged to complete the required registration and authorization procedures.
