Somaliland Launches “Xoolo-Jire” Livestock Financing Program to Boost Animal Trade and Economic Growth

“In 2026, our country’s livestock exports have already exceeded three million head,” the minister said.

The Minister of Livestock Development of the Republic of Somaliland, Hon. Omar Shucayb Mohamed, today, Wednesday 22nd July, 2026 officially launched the Xoolo-Jire Program, a financing initiative designed to support the development of the livestock business and strengthen the economy that depends on livestock production.

The program aims to provide financial support to entrepreneurs and stakeholders involved in the livestock value chain by encouraging investment, increasing productivity, and creating new economic opportunities.

Speaking at the launch, Minister Omar Shucayb Mohamed emphasized that livestock remains the backbone of Somaliland’s economy and the livelihoods of its people. He revealed that more than three million head of livestock have already been exported through Berbera Port during 2026, despite the year not yet being over.

“In 2026, our country’s livestock exports have already exceeded three million head,” the minister said.

Addressing participants at the launch of the Xoolo-Jire livestock financing program, the minister stressed that livestock farming is a highly rewarding sector with minimal risk when properly managed.

He encouraged the public to strengthen livestock husbandry and invest in the development of the sector so that Somaliland can maximize both its economic benefits and the value generated by its livestock industry.
